How to Write NYSC on CV: PPA, CDS and Date Lines

Exact lines for writing your NYSC PPA role, CDS group and service dates on a CV, with copy-ready examples for teaching, banking, health and NGO postings.

By QuickApplyPilot Team · · 8 min read

If you are working out how to write NYSC on CV, the hard part is rarely whether to include it. It is the exact wording: what job title to give your Place of Primary Assignment (PPA), where your Community Development Service (CDS) goes, and how to format dates so a recruiter can read your service year at a glance. This post gives you line-by-line formats you can copy and adapt today.

If you need help with certificate status (completed, ongoing or exempted), see our separate guide on the NYSC certificate on your CV. Here we focus only on layout and wording.

The three NYSC elements and where each one goes

Your service year usually produces three separate things worth showing. Treat them differently, because recruiters read them differently.

Element What it is Best CV section
PPA role The organisation you were posted to and the work you did there Work Experience
CDS Your weekly community development group and any project Volunteering, Leadership or under the PPA entry
Service record Batch, dates and discharge Education/Certifications or a one-line note

The common mistake is cramming all three into a single line under Education, such as "NYSC, Kano State, 2023". That hides a year of real work experience that many employers count.

How to write NYSC on CV: the PPA entry

Your PPA is the closest thing to a full-time job in your service year, so format it exactly like one. Use the same structure as every other job on your CV.

The header line formula

[Your actual role] (NYSC Corps Member) | [Organisation], [City, State] | [Month Year] – [Month Year]

Example:

Mathematics Teacher (NYSC Corps Member) | Government Secondary School, Bauchi, Bauchi State | March 2023 – February 2024

Why this works:

  • Lead with the role, not "Corps Member". A recruiter scanning for "Accounts Assistant" or "Teacher" will find it. Writing only "Corps Member" tells them nothing about what you did.
  • Keep "NYSC Corps Member" in brackets. It is honest about the nature of the posting and explains the 12-month duration.
  • Use the real organisation name. Write "Ministry of Health, Ibadan", not "State Government".

Use the title that matches what you actually did. If your PPA called you "Corps Member" but you ran the front desk every day, "Front Desk Assistant (NYSC Corps Member)" is fair. If you mostly made photocopies, don't call yourself "Administrative Officer". Your supervisor may be contacted as a referee, and the title should survive that call.

Date format

Pick one format and use it across the whole CV:

  • Month Year – Month Year (e.g. March 2023 – February 2024) is the clearest for Nigerian, UK and most international readers.
  • Avoid "2023/2024" or "Batch C 2023" as your only date. Batch codes mean little to employers outside Nigeria and to some private-sector recruiters inside it.
  • Your PPA start date is usually after orientation camp. Use the dates you actually reported and finished at your PPA, or use your full service dates if you prefer, but be consistent with what your discharge certificate shows.
  • If you are still serving, write March 2025 – Present (or the expected month, e.g. "– February 2026 (expected)").

Bullets: three to five, written as achievements

Write bullets the same way you would for any job: action verb, task, result or scale. Only include numbers you can honestly stand behind.

Formula: [Verb] + [what] + [for whom / how many] + [result, if any]

Copy-ready PPA examples by posting type

Adapt these to your real duties. Delete anything that doesn't describe what you did.

Teaching posting

Physics and Basic Science Teacher (NYSC Corps Member) | Community Secondary School, Ogoja, Cross River State | April 2023 – March 2024

  • Taught physics to three SS2 classes and basic science to JSS1, following the state scheme of work
  • Prepared and marked termly exams and continuous assessments, and submitted results to the head of department on schedule
  • Started an after-school revision session for SS3 students preparing for WAEC

Bank or finance posting

Operations Assistant (NYSC Corps Member) | [Bank name], Head Office, Lagos, Lagos State | May 2023 – April 2024

  • Processed customer account-opening documents and checked KYC details before forwarding for approval
  • Reconciled daily cash records with the branch team and flagged discrepancies to the supervisor
  • Responded to customer enquiries at the help desk during peak hours

Health posting

Pharmacy Intern (NYSC Corps Member) | General Hospital, Lafia, Nasarawa State | March 2024 – February 2025

  • Dispensed prescriptions under supervision and counselled outpatients on dosage
  • Maintained stock cards and reported near-expiry items to the chief pharmacist

NGO or ministry posting

Programme Assistant (NYSC Corps Member) | [NGO name], Abuja, FCT | June 2023 – May 2024

  • Compiled field reports from community officers into monthly summaries for the programme manager
  • Coordinated logistics for community outreach events, including venue booking and attendance sheets

How to write CDS on your CV

CDS is where many corps members did genuinely useful work: health awareness, road safety, anti-corruption, environmental projects and more. It belongs on your CV when it shows a skill relevant to the job.

Option 1: a separate Volunteering or Leadership entry

Use this if you held a role (president, secretary, project lead) or delivered a project.

CDS Group Secretary, Health Awareness CDS | NYSC, Ikot Ekpene LGA, Akwa Ibom State | April 2023 – March 2024

  • Recorded minutes and attendance for weekly meetings of the group
  • Co-organised a malaria-prevention sensitisation visit to two primary schools in the LGA

Option 2: one bullet under your PPA entry

Use this if you were a regular member with no special role. Add it as the last bullet:

  • Community Development Service: member of the Road Safety CDS group, supporting monthly awareness drives at motor parks

Personal CDS projects

If you completed a personal CDS project, it can be a strong standalone line, especially for development, education or public-sector roles:

Personal CDS Project: Library Restoration | [School name], [Town], [State] | 2024

  • Raised funds from local donors and refurbished shelving and reading tables for a school library

Describe what you actually did and what happened. If you can't verify the number of beneficiaries, leave the number out.

The service record line

Separately from your work entry, many Nigerian employers want to see at a glance that you have completed (or are completing) service. Keep this to one line under Education or Certifications:

National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) – Certificate of National Service, 2024

You don't need to repeat the PPA here. Some candidates also add the state of deployment; that is optional.

What to leave off

  • State code and call-up number. These are administrative identifiers, not achievements, and they add clutter. Bring them to interviews or onboarding if asked.
  • Orientation camp as a separate job. Camp is part of service, not a role. If you led a platoon or won an award at camp, one short bullet is enough.
  • SAED, unless relevant. Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development training can go under Training or Skills if it relates to the job (for example, a digital skills or catering course for a related role). Otherwise, skip it.

Full worked example

Here is how the pieces fit together on a graduate CV for an administrative role:

WORK EXPERIENCE

Administrative Assistant (NYSC Corps Member) | Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Akure, Ondo State | March 2024 – February 2025

  • Logged incoming memos and files and tracked them through approval
  • Drafted routine letters and circulars for review by the head of unit
  • Updated the staff leave spreadsheet and produced a monthly summary
  • Community Development Service: member of the Environmental Protection CDS group

Industrial Trainee (SIWES) | [Company], Ibadan, Oyo State | June 2021 – November 2021

  • ...

EDUCATION

BSc Agricultural Economics, Federal University of Technology, Akure | 2022 National Youth Service Corps – Certificate of National Service, 2025

For the SIWES line, see how to put SIWES experience on your CV.

Adjusting for jobs outside Nigeria

If you are applying abroad or to international remote roles, the format above mostly still works, with small changes:

  • Explain NYSC once. Recruiters in the UK, Canada or the Gulf may not know it. Write "(NYSC – Nigeria's mandatory one-year national service for graduates)" the first time it appears.
  • Drop batch, LGA and stream details. City and country are enough, e.g. "Akure, Nigeria".
  • Keep CDS only if it supports the role. Volunteering is valued in many countries, but space is tighter.

For wider changes to layout and personal details, see how to convert a Nigerian CV to a UK CV. Norms differ by country, so check the conventions of the specific market you are applying to.

Quick checklist before you send

  1. PPA appears under Work Experience with a real role title plus "(NYSC Corps Member)".
  2. Dates use Month Year – Month Year, matching the format elsewhere on your CV.
  3. Three to five PPA bullets, each starting with a verb and describing work you actually did.
  4. CDS is either a separate entry (if you had a role or project) or one bullet.
  5. One service record line under Education or Certifications.
  6. No state code, call-up number or orientation camp as a separate job.
  7. For international applications, NYSC is explained in brackets once.

For official information about the scheme itself, refer to the National Youth Service Corps website.
