NYSC Certificate on CV: Completed, Ongoing or Exempted

How to show your NYSC status on a CV, whether completed, ongoing, awaiting mobilisation or exempted, with wording for Nigerian and overseas employers.

By QuickApplyPilot Team · · 7 min read

Many Nigerian job adverts ask for proof of national service, so how you show your NYSC certificate on CV matters. Recruiters scan for it early. A vague or missing line can look like you are hiding something, even when you are not. This guide shows where NYSC belongs, how to word it if you have completed, are currently serving, are awaiting mobilisation, or hold an exemption or exclusion letter, and how to explain it to employers outside Nigeria.

One rule applies throughout: describe your status exactly as it is. Employers can check NYSC documents, and a wrong date or an implied certificate you do not hold can cost you an offer later.

Where NYSC goes on a Nigerian CV

You have three sensible options. Pick one and keep it consistent.

  1. A short "National Service" section just below Education. This is the clearest option for most fresh graduates and is easy for recruiters to find.
  2. Inside Education, as the last line under your degree. This works if your CV is already long and you want to save space.
  3. Split across two places: a one-line status in National Service or Education, and your Place of Primary Assignment (PPA) role listed under Work Experience with proper bullet points.

Option 3 is often the strongest if your PPA gave you real work to do, such as teaching, accounts support or admin. It turns a compliance line into evidence of skills. For more on how different Nigerian employers read CVs, see Nigerian CV format by employer.

How to show your NYSC certificate on CV for each status

Use the template that matches your situation. Replace the details in brackets with your own.

Completed national service

State that you completed it and give the year. You do not need your certificate number, call-up number or state code on the CV.

National Service National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), [State], [Month Year] – [Month Year] Certificate of National Service obtained

If you list your PPA under Work Experience, the National Service line can be shorter: "NYSC completed, [Year] (see Work Experience for PPA role)."

Currently serving

Many employers recruit corps members close to their passing-out date, so do not hide an ongoing service. Give the expected completion month so the recruiter can judge timing.

National Service National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), [State], [Month Year] – present Expected completion: [Month Year]

Avoid writing "completed" or giving only the end date before you have passed out. If an advert says "must have completed NYSC", it is still worth applying if your passing-out date is close, but say so plainly in your cover letter: "I complete my national service in [Month Year] and will be available from [date]."

Awaiting mobilisation

If you have graduated but have not yet been mobilised, say that. Some employers will still consider you for internships or short-term roles.

National Service Awaiting NYSC mobilisation ([Batch/Stream], [Year], if known)

Do not leave the section out entirely. A recruiter who sees a recent graduation date and no NYSC line will usually assume something is missing.

Exempted or excluded

Some graduates receive an exemption certificate or an exclusion letter instead of a Certificate of National Service, for example because of age at graduation or the type of programme they studied. The rules and the exact document you receive depend on your circumstances, so check the official guidance on the NYSC website rather than relying on this post.

Use the exact name of the document you hold:

National Service NYSC Certificate of Exemption, issued [Year]

or

National Service NYSC Letter of Exclusion, issued [Year]

You do not need to explain why you were exempted or excluded on the CV. If an interviewer asks, a short factual answer is enough: "I graduated after the age limit, so I was issued an exemption certificate."

Service not yet finished for another reason

If your service was extended, interrupted or is pending for another reason, keep the wording neutral and accurate, such as "NYSC: service in progress, expected completion [Month Year]". Never list a certificate you do not have. If you are tempted to round things up, read Is it OK to lie on your CV? first.

Turn your PPA into real experience

Your PPA is usually your first formal job, so treat it like one. Write two to four bullet points that describe what you actually did, with numbers only where you genuinely know them.

Weak:

Corps member, ABC Secondary School. Taught students.

Stronger:

Mathematics Teacher (NYSC PPA), ABC Secondary School, Ibadan | Jan 2024 – Dec 2024

  • Taught Mathematics to two SS2 classes, preparing weekly lesson notes and marking assignments
  • Ran an after-school revision group for students preparing for WAEC
  • Recorded continuous assessment scores in the school's spreadsheet each term

The same applies to Community Development Service (CDS). If you led a health outreach, ran a skills workshop or managed a CDS budget, add it as one bullet or a short "Volunteering" entry. Keep it to what you did, not what the group achieved without you.

If you have little else on your CV, our guide to a CV for a fresh graduate in Nigeria with no experience shows how to build around your PPA, projects and SIWES.

What to leave off

  • Certificate number, call-up number and state code. They add nothing for the recruiter and expose personal data. Provide them only if an application form asks.
  • A scanned certificate inside the CV. Attach a copy separately only when the employer requests documents.
  • Platoon number, camp details and orientation activities. Unless a camp role is directly relevant (for example, you were a camp medical volunteer applying for a health role), skip it.
  • Vague phrases like "NYSC: Yes" or "National Service: Done". Give the status and year.

Showing NYSC to employers outside Nigeria

Recruiters in the UK, US, Canada and Australia are unlikely to know what NYSC is. Spell it out once and frame it as work experience, since there is generally no mandatory national service requirement for graduates in those countries.

Country How to present NYSC Notes
Nigeria Separate National Service line plus PPA under Experience Status and dates are often screened early
UK PPA under Work Experience; brief explanation in brackets No need for a separate National Service section
US PPA as a job entry on a one- or two-page resume Cut camp details; focus on results and duties
Canada PPA under Experience; can also count as relevant work Explain it clearly for recruiters unfamiliar with Nigeria
Australia PPA under Employment History Keep wording plain and duty-focused

A useful one-line explanation:

Graduate Accounts Assistant, Lagos State Ministry of Finance | Mar 2023 – Feb 2024 (Completed during Nigeria's one-year National Youth Service Corps programme for graduates)

This tells an overseas reader it was a structured, full-time placement without overselling it. For the wider changes, such as dropping date of birth and state of origin, see how to convert a Nigerian CV to an international CV. Note that if you later apply for overseas study or immigration routes, those bodies may have their own document rules, so always check the official government or institution source.

Quick checklist before you send your CV

  • My NYSC status is one of: completed, currently serving, awaiting mobilisation, exempted, or excluded, and the wording matches the document I hold
  • Dates are month and year, and match my certificate or call-up letter
  • If serving, I have stated my expected completion month
  • My PPA role appears under Work Experience with honest bullet points
  • I have removed certificate numbers, call-up numbers and state codes
  • For overseas applications, I have explained NYSC in one short line
  • My cover letter mentions availability if I have not yet passed out

If you want help laying this out, the AI CV builder can format a National Service section and PPA entry from your own details. It works with what you give it, so the accuracy of your dates and status is still down to you, and no format can promise an interview. What a clear, truthful NYSC line does is remove one easy reason for a recruiter to set your CV aside.
