If you are searching for how to write a CV for a remote job with no experience in Nigeria, start here. You probably have more evidence than you think. Remote employers want proof that you can work without someone watching you. They want to see that you communicate clearly in writing, meet deadlines and handle online tools.
Your NYSC year, SIWES placement and any freelance gigs can show those things. This only works if you write about them in the right way and stay honest about what you did. This guide shows you how, with bullet examples and a one-page template.
What remote employers need to see (and you can prove)
A remote hiring manager cannot judge you by how you come across in the office. They read your CV for signals that you will be reliable at a distance. The most useful signals for an entry-level candidate are:
- Written communication: reports, emails, documentation, client messages.
- Self-management: tasks you finished with little supervision, deadlines you met.
- Tool fluency: Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Trello, Notion, Zoom, Canva, spreadsheets, or tools specific to the role.
- Time-zone awareness: proof that you can work with people in other places and at agreed hours.
- Dependable setup: a working laptop, internet access and a plan for power cuts. This usually belongs in an application form or cover letter rather than as a big CV section.
You do not need a past job titled 'remote' to show these. You need specific bullets that point to them.
How to write a CV for a remote job with no experience in Nigeria: step by step
Step 1: Fix your header for an international reader
Include your name, city and state, phone number with +234, a professional email, and a LinkedIn or portfolio link. Add your time zone, for example: Lagos, Nigeria (WAT, UTC+1). Available for overlap with UK and EU hours. Only write that if it is true.
Many international employers do not expect your date of birth, state of origin, marital status or a photo. A Nigerian employer may still ask for some of these. Check the job ad and the company's country. Leave out your full home address, because city and state is enough.
Step 2: Write a short, factual summary
Use two or three lines that say what you are, which role you are targeting and your strongest proof. For example:
Economics graduate (NYSC completed 2024) seeking a remote operations or customer support role. Managed attendance and records for 300 students in Google Sheets during NYSC, and delivered 12 transcription projects for overseas clients on deadline.
Avoid lines like 'hardworking, passionate team player'. Every remote applicant writes them, so they tell the reader nothing.
Step 3: Rename your section 'Experience'
You are not limited to 'Work Experience' meaning salaried jobs. Use a single Experience section and list NYSC, SIWES and freelance work in it, newest first. Label each one honestly, for example 'Corps Member (NYSC)', 'Industrial Trainee (SIWES)' or 'Freelance Transcriber'.
Using NYSC as remote-readiness evidence
Your primary assignment (PPA) probably involved records, communication or coordination, even if it was not remote. Choose the duties that carry over to remote work and describe the result.
Weak: Taught mathematics at a secondary school.
Stronger:
- Built a shared Google Sheets tracker for test scores across 4 classes, so the principal could review progress without requesting paper files.
- Wrote weekly progress summaries for the head of department, sent by email every Friday.
- Ran a WhatsApp group with 60 parents to share homework and exam dates, and answered questions in writing within one school day.
If you joined a CDS group, include it if you coordinated, documented or reported something. Fundraising records, meeting minutes or social media posts all count. For how to show your certificate status (completed, ongoing or exempted), see our guide to listing your NYSC certificate on a CV.
Using SIWES as remote-readiness evidence
SIWES is often a student's first structured workplace experience. Look for tasks with a digital or written output: data entry, reports, logbooks, system testing, customer records or drafting documents.
Example for an IT or computer science student:
- Logged and categorised 40+ staff IT support requests in a shared spreadsheet, and updated status daily for my supervisor.
- Wrote step-by-step guides for resetting email passwords, which the team then sent to staff instead of visiting desks.
- Completed my SIWES logbook weekly and had each entry signed off on time.
Example for an accounting or business student:
- Reconciled petty cash records in Excel each week and flagged differences to the accountant.
- Drafted routine letters and emails to vendors for review before sending.
Your logbook is useful when you write these bullets, because it reminds you of real dates and tasks. Our SIWES CV guide covers more achievement-bullet formats.
Using freelance gigs as remote-readiness evidence
Freelance work is the closest thing to remote employment you can show, because it was remote. Small gigs count: transcription, data entry, graphic design, writing, virtual assistance, tutoring online, social media management or simple websites.
Write about them like a job:
Freelance Virtual Assistant | Self-employed, remote | Jan 2023 – Present
- Managed calendars and inboxes for 2 small-business clients in the UK and US, working across a 5–6 hour time difference.
- Delivered 30+ tasks through Trello with agreed deadlines, and sent written updates when each task was done.
- Kept a client satisfaction record. Both clients renewed after the first month.
Rules for freelance entries:
- Group small gigs under one heading rather than listing ten one-off jobs.
- Respect confidentiality. Do not name clients or share their work without permission. 'A UK property agency' is fine.
- Use only real numbers. If you don't know the exact count, say 'several' or leave the number out. Do not round 8 up to 'dozens'.
- Link to a portfolio if you have one, such as a Google Drive folder, Behance, GitHub or a simple website. Make sure the links are set to public view.
A one-page template you can copy
For entry-level remote roles, one page is usually enough. Use a single column with standard headings and no tables or text boxes. Many applicant tracking systems read simple layouts more reliably.
NAME Lagos, Nigeria (WAT, UTC+1) | +234 ... | email | LinkedIn | Portfolio
Summary 2–3 lines: target role + strongest proof.
Experience Freelance [Role] | Remote | dates
- 2–4 bullets: tool + task + result
Corps Member (NYSC), [Organisation] | City | dates
- 2–3 bullets: written communication, records, coordination
Industrial Trainee (SIWES), [Organisation] | City | dates
- 2–3 bullets: digital tasks, reporting
Skills Tools: Google Workspace, Excel, Slack, Trello (only what you have used) Remote: async written updates, working across time zones, managing a shared calendar
Education B.Sc. [Course], [University], year, class of degree if it helps
Certifications (optional) Only courses you finished, with the provider name.
Once your draft is ready, compare it with the actual job ads you are targeting. The QuickApplyPilot remote and international jobs tool can help you check a remote listing for location restrictions and prepare a matching application. Its suggestions are estimates, not a prediction of what any employer will decide. You can do the same check by hand with the steps below.
Before you send: eligibility and honesty checks
Check where the job is open
Many 'remote' roles are only open to people in certain countries. They may need you to be in a particular country for tax, payroll or legal reasons. Read the location line and the application questions carefully. Look for phrases like 'remote (US only)', 'EMEA' or 'must have right to work in the UK'. Applying for roles you are eligible for saves time on both sides.
How you get paid also differs by employer. Some hire Nigerians as contractors and others go through an employer-of-record service. Ask the employer how payment works before you accept. Tax and foreign-exchange rules can change, so check the current position with official Nigerian sources or a qualified adviser rather than relying on this post.
Watch for scams
Fake remote offers often target new graduates. Be wary if you are asked to pay for training or equipment, get hired after a chat-only 'interview', or are asked for your BVN. Our checklist for spotting fake remote job scams in Nigeria goes through the warning signs.
Run an honesty pass
Read every line and ask: could I explain this in an interview, with an example? If not, rewrite it or remove it.
- Only add a tool to your skills if you have actually used it. Watching a tutorial is not the same as using it.
- Only add a keyword from the job ad if it describes something you really did.
- Don't call SIWES or NYSC a 'full-time remote role'.
- Keep dates accurate. Gaps are easier to explain than invented dates.
Tailor for each application
Keep a master version with every bullet you could use. For each application, choose the 8–12 bullets that match that ad most closely. Change the summary and the order of skills to fit the role. Leave the facts as they are.
No CV can guarantee an interview, especially for remote roles that receive applicants worldwide. A CV built on clear, honest proof from NYSC, SIWES and freelance work gives a remote hiring manager real reasons to take you seriously.
