US Resume Format for International Applicants: What to Cut
Moving from a UK or Nigerian CV to a US resume? Here's what to strip, what to rewrite and what to keep, with a before-and-after header and checklist.

If you're applying to US employers with a UK or Nigerian CV, the biggest wins usually come from removing things, not adding them. This guide covers the US resume format for international applicants: what to cut, what to rewrite and what to keep so a US recruiter can scan your experience quickly.
This post uses US English and "resume" because it's about the US market. None of these edits guarantee interviews. They remove friction and avoid signals that US hiring teams often find unusual or uncomfortable.
Why US recruiters react differently to a UK or Nigerian CV
US employers work under federal anti-discrimination laws, enforced by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). These laws cover characteristics such as age, sex, religion, national origin and disability. Because of this, many US recruiters prefer not to see that information on a resume at all. Some companies even have processes for handling resumes that include photos or personal details.
A Nigerian CV often includes date of birth, state of origin, marital status and religion. A UK CV is usually leaner but may still include a personal statement paragraph, full address and "References available on request." None of these are wrong in their home markets. They just don't fit US conventions.
US resume format for international applicants: what to strip
Use this table as a quick audit of your current document.
| Item on your CV | Common in | US approach |
|---|---|---|
| Photo | Nigeria, parts of Europe | Remove |
| Date of birth or age | Nigeria | Remove |
| Marital status, number of children | Nigeria | Remove |
| State of origin, LGA, hometown | Nigeria | Remove |
| Religion | Nigeria | Remove |
| Gender | Nigeria | Remove |
| Nationality | Nigeria, some UK CVs | Usually remove; address work authorization separately (see below) |
| Full street address | UK, Nigeria | Replace with city and country |
| Referees with contact details | Nigeria, UK | Remove; prepare a separate list |
| "References available on request" | UK | Remove |
| Declaration and signature | Nigeria | Remove |
| Primary and secondary school, WAEC/NECO or GCSE grades | Nigeria, UK | Usually remove once you have a degree |
| Long career objective or personal statement | Nigeria, UK | Replace with a 2-3 line summary or nothing |
| Hobbies and interests | UK, Nigeria | Remove unless directly relevant |
| Passport or ID number | Some Nigerian CVs | Never include |

Personal details
Your US header should contain only what a recruiter needs to contact you:
- Full name
- City and country (or city and state if you're already in the US)
- Phone number with country code
- Professional email address
- LinkedIn URL, and a portfolio or GitHub link if relevant
That's it. If you're unsure how much location detail to include, our post on whether to put your address on a resume explains the city-and-state approach.
Referees and declarations
Nigerian CVs often end with two or three referees, plus a line such as "I hereby declare that the information above is true." US resumes skip both. Keep your referees in a separate document and send it only when asked, usually late in the process. Let your referees know in advance that a US employer may contact them, possibly across time zones.
School history before university
If you have a degree, cut primary school, secondary school and your WAEC, NECO, GCSE or A-level results. US recruiters rarely look for these. If you don't have a degree, keep your highest completed qualification and describe it plainly.
NYSC and national service
Don't strip your NYSC year if you did real work during it. Move it into your experience section and describe what you did, like any other role:
Teaching Assistant (National Youth Service Corps), Government Secondary School, Ibadan, Nigeria | Mar 2022 – Feb 2023
- Taught mathematics to three classes of around 40 students
- Created weekly practice quizzes and tracked results in a spreadsheet
Add a short phrase such as "national service year" in brackets if the acronym needs context. Leave the certificate number out.
What to rewrite rather than delete
Personal statement or objective → short summary
UK personal statements and Nigerian career objectives often run to five or six lines of general qualities. In the US, a short summary works better, or you can skip it if your first job title does the work.
Before (typical objective):
To secure a challenging position in a reputable organisation where I can utilise my skills and contribute to organisational growth.
After (US-style summary):
Operations analyst with 4 years in logistics and fintech. Built weekly SQL reporting for a 30-person ops team and reduced manual reconciliation time. Open to remote roles and relocation with sponsorship.
Only include numbers you can explain in an interview. If you don't have a figure, describe the scope (team size, volume, tools) honestly instead.
Duties → achievements
Many CVs list responsibilities: "Responsible for customer complaints." US resumes lean towards outcomes and specifics. Try this pattern for each bullet: action verb + what you did + scale or result.
- Before: Responsible for handling customer complaints.
- After: Resolved around 60 customer tickets a day via email and chat, escalating billing disputes to finance within agreed timelines.
Keep it truthful. Our guide on tailoring without lying shows where fair rewording ends and exaggeration begins.
Spelling, dates and terms
- Switch to US spelling: organize, analyze, program, center.
- Write dates as month and year ("Jan 2021 – Present"). Avoid 04/01/2021, which a US reader may read as April 1.
- Translate local terms: "Second Class Upper" can stay, but you might add "(UK/Nigerian honours classification)". Don't convert grades into a US GPA yourself unless you have an official credential evaluation.
- Explain unfamiliar employers in a few words: "Leading Nigerian commercial bank" or "UK regional NHS trust." Avoid claims you can't back up, like "largest."
- Set the document to US Letter size (8.5 x 11 inches), not A4, before exporting to PDF.
Length
Many US recruiters expect one page for early-career applicants and up to two for experienced ones. Three- or four-page Nigerian CVs usually need cutting. Our one page or two page US resume guide gives a rule of thumb.
Work authorization: say it once, accurately
This is the one detail US recruiters may genuinely want to know early. If you need visa sponsorship, hiding it rarely helps and can waste time on both sides. Options:
- Add a line under your header: "Requires U.S. visa sponsorship" or "Authorized to work in the U.S." (only if true).
- For remote roles you'd do from abroad: "Based in Lagos, Nigeria (WAT, UTC+1); available for remote contractor roles."
- Answer the application form's work authorization question honestly; don't contradict it on your resume.
Visa rules are complex and change. This post is general information, not legal or immigration advice. Check official sources such as USCIS: Working in the United States and, if needed, speak to a qualified immigration attorney.
Before and after: a header makeover
Before (Nigerian CV):
CURRICULUM VITAE Name: Adaeze Okafor Address: 14 Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos State Date of Birth: 12/06/1996 | Sex: Female | Marital Status: Single State of Origin: Anambra | LGA: Onitsha North | Religion: Christianity Phone: 0803 000 0000
After (US resume):
Adaeze Okafor Lagos, Nigeria | +234 803 000 0000 | adaeze.okafor@email.com | linkedin.com/in/adaezeokafor Requires U.S. visa sponsorship for on-site roles; available now for remote contract work
The "Curriculum Vitae" heading goes too. Your name is the heading.
For UK applicants, the change is usually smaller: drop the full postcode address, shorten the personal statement, remove "References available on request", and switch spellings and paper size.
Once your resume is in US shape, the QuickApplyPilot remote and international jobs tool can help you adapt it for specific remote or overseas roles and keep track of location and time-zone details. It suggests edits based on what you give it; it can't tell you whether an employer will sponsor or hire you.
A note on applicant tracking systems
Most larger US employers use an applicant tracking system (ATS) to collect and organize applications. Recruiters then search and filter within it. Clean formatting helps the system read your resume correctly: a single column, standard headings ("Experience", "Education", "Skills"), no text inside images, and no key details hidden in headers or footers.
No format "beats" an ATS. A readable layout simply makes sure the person reviewing your application sees what you actually wrote.
Final checklist before you hit submit
- No photo, date of birth, gender, marital status, religion, state of origin or ID numbers.
- Header: name, city and country, phone with country code, email, LinkedIn.
- No referees, declaration or signature.
- Pre-university education removed (if you have a degree).
- Summary is 2-3 lines and specific, or removed.
- Bullets show actions and results you can explain in an interview.
- US spelling, month-year dates, US Letter size.
- Work authorization stated accurately, once.
- One page (early career) or two (experienced).
- Saved as a simple PDF or Word file, as the application requests, with a clear file name such as Adaeze-Okafor-Resume.pdf.
Stripping these details won't change your experience, but it lets a US recruiter see it without distractions. Make the cuts once, keep a master US version, and tailor the summary and top bullets for each role.
