New Zealand CV Format: Norms, Referees and Length (Sample)

How to format a CV for New Zealand jobs: 2-3 page length, referees, work rights, what to leave out, and an annotated sample you can adapt.

By QuickApplyPilot Team · · 7 min read

If you are applying for work in Aotearoa New Zealand, the New Zealand CV format differs from the UK, US and Australian versions in small but noticeable ways. NZ employers often expect a CV of two to three pages, a clear statement of your right to work, and named referees rather than a vague 'available on request'. This guide covers those norms, what to leave out, and an annotated sample you can adapt today.

None of this guarantees an interview. It simply removes avoidable reasons for a recruiter to pass over your application.

The New Zealand CV format at a glance

Element Typical NZ expectation Notes
Name "CV" "Resume" is understood, but "CV" is the everyday term
Length 2-3 pages Graduates often fit on 1-2 pages
Photo Not expected Leave it out unless the role specifically asks
Personal details Name, phone, email, city/region, LinkedIn No date of birth, marital status or ID numbers
Work rights Usually stated near the top Especially important if you are overseas or on a visa
Profile 3-5 lines Specific to the role, no clichés
Experience Reverse chronological Achievements over duties
Referees Often listed by name Two or three, with permission
Spelling NZ/British English "organisation", "programme", "centre"

The government careers service, Careers.govt.nz, publishes free CV guidance and templates that broadly match these norms, so it is worth checking alongside this post.

Length: why two to three pages is normal

NZ recruiters generally accept a slightly longer CV than a US one-page resume. Two pages suits most people with a few years of experience; three is reasonable for senior, technical or long careers where the detail is relevant.

The test is relevance, not page count. If page three is a list of duties from a job you left 15 years ago, cut it to a single line or remove it. If you are coming from the UK, the guidance in our post on how long a CV should be in the UK transfers almost directly.

Quick length checklist

  • Most recent 10-15 years in detail; older roles as one line each (title, employer, years).
  • 3-6 bullets for recent roles, 1-3 for older ones.
  • No full page devoted to hobbies or a long skills cloud.
  • Font 10.5-12pt with normal margins. Shrinking text to hit a page target makes it harder to read.

Work rights: state them clearly

This is the section overseas applicants most often miss. Many NZ job ads ask whether you hold the right to work in New Zealand, and some online application forms filter on it. Putting a clear line near the top of your CV saves the recruiter guessing.

Write only what is true. Examples:

  • New Zealand citizen.
  • New Zealand resident visa holder - full work rights.
  • Australian citizen - eligible to live and work in New Zealand.
  • Currently in New Zealand on an open work visa valid until March 2027.
  • Based in Manila; would require an employer-supported work visa. Available to relocate within 8 weeks of a visa decision.

Visa categories and rules change, and this post is general information, not immigration advice. Check the current options on the official Immigration New Zealand website, and speak to a licensed immigration adviser if your situation is complicated. Our step-by-step guide to applying for jobs with visa sponsorship covers the application side.

What to leave out

NZ employers are bound by the Human Rights Act 1993, which prohibits discrimination on grounds such as age, marital status, religious belief and ethnic or national origin. Recruiters generally prefer not to receive information they should not be using, so leave out:

  • Date of birth or age
  • Photo
  • Marital status, children or dependants
  • Religion, nationality as a header field (your work rights line covers what matters)
  • Passport or national ID numbers
  • Full street address (city or region is enough)
  • Salary history

If you are converting a CV from a country where these details are standard, deleting them is one of the quickest improvements you can make.

Referees: list them or not?

In New Zealand, reference checks are a common late-stage step, and many employers like to see referees named on the CV. Listing two or three is the usual approach; "available on request" is acceptable but can look a little guarded to some NZ recruiters. Practice is similar to Australia - see our post on Australian CV referees for the trade-offs.

How to list referees well

  1. Ask permission first. Tell each referee which roles you are applying for so they are not caught off guard.
  2. Prefer recent managers. A direct supervisor from your last two roles carries more weight than a friend or colleague.
  3. Give context. Name, job title, organisation, your relationship, phone and email.
  4. Note time zones for overseas referees. A short line such as "Based in Lagos (NZ time minus 11-12 hours); email preferred" helps.
  5. Protect privacy if needed. If you post your CV publicly on job boards, swap the referee section for "Referee details provided on request" in that version.

Why it works

  • Work rights on line three. The recruiter answers the first screening question instantly.
  • Profile names the target role. It says what the person does and what they want next, with no "hard-working team player" filler.
  • Achievements use honest specifics. "Reduced stock discrepancies" is stated without an invented percentage. If you have a real, verifiable number, use it; if not, describe the change plainly.
  • Older roles are compressed. The retail job gets one line, keeping the CV to two pages.
  • Referees are current and former managers, both named with permission.

If you would rather not build the layout from scratch, the QuickApplyPilot AI CV builder can help you draft and format a CV along these lines from your own experience. It works from what you tell it, so review every line and remove anything that is not accurate before you send it.

Formatting for online applications

Many NZ employers and recruitment agencies use applicant tracking systems or online forms that read your CV text. To keep that text readable:

  • Use a single-column layout with standard headings (Profile, Experience, Education, Referees). Our test of whether an ATS can read a two-column CV shows why.
  • Avoid putting contact details or work rights in a header or text box, as some systems skip them.
  • Save as Word or a text-based PDF unless the ad specifies a format.
  • Mirror the job ad's wording only where it truthfully describes your experience. If the ad says "stock control" and you did stock control, use those words; do not add skills you do not have.

Overseas qualifications and experience

If your qualifications are from outside New Zealand, help the reader place them:

  • Give the qualification name in English plus the institution and country, e.g. BSc Computer Science, University of Lagos, Nigeria (2016).
  • If you have an assessment from the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), add it, e.g. Assessed by NZQA as comparable to a NZ Level 7 Bachelor's degree. Only include this if you actually hold the assessment.
  • For regulated professions such as nursing, teaching or engineering, mention your NZ registration status honestly (for example, "application lodged" rather than implying you are registered).
  • Briefly explain employers that NZ readers will not recognise: Example Bank Plc (one of Nigeria's commercial banks, approx. 3,000 staff).

Final check before you send

  1. Two to three pages, single column, readable font size.
  2. Work rights stated accurately near the top.
  3. No photo, date of birth, marital status or ID numbers.
  4. Profile tailored to this specific role.
  5. Achievements are true and you could explain each one in an interview.
  6. NZ/British spelling throughout.
  7. Two or three referees who have agreed and know the role.
  8. File named clearly, e.g. Aroha-Ngata-CV.pdf.

Work through that list for each application and your CV will look familiar to a New Zealand reader, which is the point of getting the format right.
