ATS Friendly CV Format for Nigeria and Jobberman

How to format a plain, readable CV for Jobberman and other Nigerian job portals: no tables, simple headings, clean files and honest keywords.

By QuickApplyPilot Team · · 8 min read

If you are searching for an ATS friendly CV format for Nigeria and Jobberman, the answer is less about design and more about removing things software struggles with. Job portals and employers' applicant tracking systems (ATS) often try to pull text out of your file to fill in fields such as name, job titles, dates and skills. The plainer your layout, the more likely that text comes out in the right order.

This guide covers what to keep, what to remove and how to check your file before you upload it to Jobberman, LinkedIn, MyJobMag or a company careers page.

How job portals and ATS actually read your CV

An ATS is software employers use to collect, store, sort and search applications. It is not one product. Different employers use different systems, set up in different ways, and many Nigerian employers still review CVs manually or by email.

When software reads a CV, it usually converts your file to plain text, then tries to work out which text is your name, which is a job title and which is a date. Recruiters may then search that text for words such as "credit analysis", "IFRS" or "customer service".

Two honest points before we start:

  • No format guarantees a shortlist. A clean file just reduces the chance that your information is lost or scrambled.
  • Nobody outside the employer knows exactly how their system is configured. Any score from an online checker, including QuickApplyPilot's, is an estimate of readability and keyword match, not the employer's own score.

The ATS friendly CV format for Nigeria and Jobberman: what to use

Think of your CV as a document that must still make sense if every bit of styling disappears. Here is the layout that works across most portals.

Use a single column

Two-column templates look tidy, but text extraction can read across both columns line by line. Your skills sidebar can end up merged into your job descriptions, or your contact details can appear halfway down.

Keep everything in one column, top to bottom, in this order:

  1. Name and contact details
  2. Professional summary (3-4 lines)
  3. Key skills
  4. Work experience (most recent first)
  5. Education
  6. NYSC (if relevant)
  7. Certifications and professional memberships
  8. Referees, or "available on request" if the employer has not asked for them

Avoid tables, text boxes and graphics

This is the most common problem in Nigerian CV templates shared online. Tables, text boxes, icons, skill bars, star ratings and charts can be skipped entirely or read in the wrong order.

Instead of this Use this
A table with dates in one column and roles in another A plain line: Customer Service Officer, Access Bank, Lagos, Jan 2021 - Present
Skill bars showing "Excel 80%" A plain list: Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, dashboards)
Phone and email icons Words: Phone: and Email:
Contact details in the header area Contact details in the main body, at the top
A photo in a text box No photo, unless the employer specifically asks for one

Some systems read headers and footers poorly, so do not put your name, phone number or email only in the document header.

Use standard section headings

Software looks for familiar words. "Work Experience" is easier to recognise than "My Journey"; "Education" is easier than "Where I Learnt". Stick to:

  • Professional Summary
  • Key Skills
  • Work Experience
  • Education
  • Certifications
  • NYSC

Keep fonts and formatting simple

Use a common font such as Calibri, Arial or Georgia at 10-12pt, with headings slightly larger. Bold for headings and job titles is fine. Plain round bullets are safer than arrows, ticks or emoji.

Write dates consistently, for example Mar 2022 - Present or 03/2022 - Present. Mixing styles makes it harder for software and humans to calculate your experience.

Choose the right file type

Follow the portal's instructions first. If you have a choice, a .docx file is widely readable, and a text-based PDF (exported from Word or Google Docs, not scanned) is usually fine too.

Avoid scanned PDFs or photos of your CV. To a computer, a scanned page is an image, not text. Name the file clearly: Chinedu-Okafor-CV.pdf, not Final-CV-new-2.pdf.

A plain template you can copy

Here is a stripped-back structure. Replace the examples with your own true details.

CHINEDU OKAFOR Lagos, Nigeria | Phone: 0803 000 0000 | Email: chinedu.okafor@email.com | LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/chineduokafor

PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY Customer service officer with three years' experience in retail banking, handling account enquiries, complaints and digital banking support for walk-in and phone customers.

KEY SKILLS Customer complaint resolution | Account opening and KYC | Microsoft Excel | CRM systems | Cross-selling banking products

WORK EXPERIENCE Customer Service Officer, ABC Bank, Ikeja, Lagos | Jan 2022 - Present

  • Handle around 40 customer enquiries per day across the counter and phone (use your real figure)

Notice what is missing: no table, no photo, no icons, no columns. It still looks professional when printed.

If you would rather start from a structured layout than a blank page, the AI CV builder produces a plain, single-column draft that you can then edit with your own details.

Keywords: add them honestly

Formatting helps software read your CV. Keywords help a recruiter find it when they search. Both matter.

How to find the right keywords

  1. Copy the job ad into a document.
  2. Highlight the hard skills, tools, qualifications and job titles (for example "sales reporting", "SAP", "ICAN", "relationship manager").
  3. Compare them with your CV. Where you genuinely have that skill or experience, use the employer's wording.
  4. Where you do not have it, leave it out. You can mention transferable experience truthfully instead.

For example, if the ad says "stakeholder management" and your CV says "worked with different departments", it is fair to rewrite it as "Managed stakeholder communication with finance and operations teams on monthly reporting", provided that is what you actually did.

Adding skills you do not have, or hiding white text full of keywords, is risky. Recruiters read shortlisted CVs, interviews test your claims and some employers run background checks. Our guide on how to tailor a CV without lying shows the difference between fair and fake edits.

To see roughly how your CV lines up with a specific job ad, you can run it through the ATS CV checker. Treat the result as a guide to gaps worth reviewing, not a prediction of what any employer's system will do.

Portal profiles versus uploaded CVs

Many Nigerian job portals, Jobberman included, let you build an online profile as well as upload a CV. Some portals pre-fill profile fields from your uploaded file.

After uploading, check every pre-filled field. Look for:

  • Job titles placed under the wrong employer
  • Dates missing or merged
  • Skills cut off or combined into one long line
  • Your name or phone number missing

Correct these by hand. If many fields come out wrong, that is a useful sign your file layout is confusing the parser, and simplifying it will probably help elsewhere too.

Keep your profile and your CV consistent. If your profile says you left a role in 2022 but your CV says 2023, a recruiter may notice.

Quick check before you upload

Run through this list every time:

  • Single column, no tables or text boxes
  • Contact details in the body, not only the header
  • Standard headings (Work Experience, Education, Skills)
  • Consistent date format throughout
  • No skill bars, icons, charts or photos (unless requested)
  • Text-based .docx or PDF, not a scan
  • Clear file name with your name
  • Keywords from the ad included only where true
  • Two pages or fewer for most roles (longer may suit senior or academic CVs)

Simple test: open your PDF, select all the text, copy it and paste it into a plain text editor such as Notepad. If the result reads in a sensible order, software is more likely to read it sensibly too. If it is jumbled or blank, simplify the layout.

Nigerian details: what to include or leave out

Nigerian CVs traditionally included date of birth, state of origin, marital status, religion and a photo. Many employers no longer need these, and leaving them out keeps your CV shorter and focuses attention on your skills.

Some employers, particularly in the public sector or certain banks and graduate schemes, ask for specific personal details or NYSC information. Follow the application instructions where they are given. Our guide to the Nigerian CV format by employer covers what different sectors tend to expect.

NYSC status matters for many Nigerian roles, so include it clearly if you have completed or been exempted from service.

If you are also applying abroad or remotely

The plain-layout advice above works well internationally, but the content conventions differ:

  • UK: Leave out date of birth, photo, marital status and religion. Two pages is typical. Use "CV".
  • US: Usually called a resume, often one page for early-career roles. Photos and personal details are generally left out.
  • Canada: Similar to the US style; personal details and photos are usually omitted, and Canadian employers often value clearly listed accomplishments.
  • Australia: CVs are often two to three pages, without a photo or date of birth. Referees are commonly listed or offered on request.
  • Remote roles: State your location and time zone clearly so employers know when you can work.

Keep one master CV with everything, then save a tailored version for each country or application. The layout can stay the same; the personal details, length and keywords will change.
