How to Apply for Jobs in the UK From Nigeria: CV Tips
How to apply for jobs in the UK from Nigeria: CV tips, a cover letter template, where to search for sponsored roles, and where to check visa rules.

If you are working out how to apply for jobs in the UK from Nigeria, CV tips are only part of the job. You also need a short cover letter and a realistic list of places to search. This guide covers all three, with examples you can adapt today.
It doesn't cover visa law in detail. Immigration rules change often, so for anything about visas, follow the official GOV.UK links below. Treat this post as general information, not legal advice.
Step 1: Check whether a role can realistically sponsor you
Most Nigerian applicants without existing UK work rights will need a work visa, often the Skilled Worker route or, for health and care roles, the Health and Care Worker route. In general, the employer needs a sponsor licence and the job has to meet the route's requirements, which include occupation and salary rules.
Check these official sources before you spend hours on an application:
- Skilled Worker visa on GOV.UK: eligibility, salary rules and eligible occupations.
- Health and Care Worker visa on GOV.UK: for clinical and some care roles.
- Register of licensed sponsors: a downloadable list of organisations licensed to sponsor workers.
Being on the sponsor register does not mean an employer will sponsor every role or every applicant. It just tells you sponsorship is possible. Read each job ad for wording such as "visa sponsorship available" or "we are unable to sponsor", and believe it.
How to apply for jobs in the UK from Nigeria: CV tips that matter most
A UK CV looks different from many Nigerian CVs. Here are the changes that make the biggest difference. For a fuller breakdown, see Nigerian CV vs UK CV differences.
1. Remove personal details UK employers don't ask for
UK employers generally avoid collecting information that could lead to discrimination. Take out:
- Photo
- Date of birth and age
- Marital status and number of children
- State of origin, LGA, religion and tribe
- Full home address (city and country are enough)
2. Write a clear, honest contact line
Recruiters need to know where you are and what your work status is. Be upfront rather than leaving them to guess.
Adaeze Okafor Lagos, Nigeria · Open to relocation to the UK · Will require visa sponsorship +234 803 000 0000 · adaeze.okafor@email.com · linkedin.com/in/adaezeokafor
Write your phone number in international format (+234), and use a professional email address. If you already hold UK work rights, for example through a family visa, say so plainly instead.
3. Keep it to around two pages
Two pages is the usual norm for experienced candidates in the UK. Graduates can often fit on one. Cut secondary-school results (WAEC/NECO), long hobby lists and a separate referee page. "References available on request" is optional, and many people simply leave it off.
4. Make Nigerian context readable
A UK recruiter may not know your employer, your grading system or local job titles. Add a few words of context:
- Employers: "Zenith Bank Plc (one of Nigeria's largest commercial banks)" or "Mid-sized FMCG distributor, 120 staff". Only describe an employer in a way you can stand behind.
- Degrees: "BSc Accounting, University of Lagos, Second Class Upper". If you want to show how your qualification compares to UK levels, UK ENIC offers official statements of comparability (this is a paid service). Some employers and professional bodies ask for one, but many don't.
- NYSC: List it as experience if you did real work, e.g. "NYSC Corps Member, Accounts Assistant, Kaduna State Ministry of Finance".
- Currency: If you mention budgets or revenue, convert to GBP or give both, e.g. "₦45m (approx. £X at the time)". Leave out the conversion if you aren't sure of the rate.
5. Turn duties into evidence
UK CVs are strongest when each bullet shows what you did and what happened as a result.
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| Responsible for reconciliations | Reconciled 14 bank accounts monthly, clearing a backlog of unmatched items within my first quarter |
| Handled customer complaints | Resolved escalated customer complaints by phone and email, and wrote a FAQ that the team still uses |
| Worked on social media | Planned and scheduled Instagram content for 3 retail brands using Meta Business Suite |
Use real numbers only. If you don't know the exact figure, describe the scope instead ("for a 6-person team") rather than guessing.
6. Match the job ad's language, truthfully
Many UK employers use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to store and search applications. Recruiters may filter or search by keywords, so using the job ad's wording for skills you genuinely have helps a human find and understand your CV. Examples include "month-end close", "stakeholder management" and "safeguarding".
Don't add a skill you don't have just because it appears in the ad. It tends to unravel at interview or reference stage. If you want a quick view of how closely your CV covers a specific ad, the QuickApplyPilot ATS CV checker gives a match estimate. That score is our own estimate, not the score any employer's system will give you.
7. Use a simple, ATS-readable layout
Use a single column with standard headings (Profile, Experience, Education, Skills) and a common font. Avoid text inside images, icons for contact details and tables for core content. Save as PDF or Word, whichever the ad asks for.
Writing the cover letter (and when you need something else)
Most private-sector UK jobs ask for a CV and either a short cover letter or none at all. Keep a letter to one page. Don't use the long formal "application letter" style common in Nigeria.
Here is a template to adapt:
Dear [Name / Hiring Manager],
I'm applying for the [Job Title] role at [Company]. I have [X years] of experience in [field] in Lagos, most recently at [Employer], where I [one specific, relevant achievement].
Your advert mentions [requirement 1] and [requirement 2]. In my current role I [evidence for 1]. I also [evidence for 2].
I'm based in Nigeria and would need Skilled Worker visa sponsorship. I noticed the role states sponsorship is available, and I'm able to relocate within [realistic timeframe]. I'm happy to interview by video at a time that suits you (Nigeria is currently [0/1] hour(s) [ahead of/the same as] UK time).
Thank you for considering my application.
Kind regards, [Name]
Check the time difference when you send this, because UK clocks change in March and October while Nigeria's don't.
Public sector and NHS roles are different. NHS Jobs and many councils use application forms with a "supporting information" or "supporting statement" section, scored against a person specification. The CV may not be used at all. See how to write a supporting statement for a structure.
Where to search for UK jobs from Nigeria
Start with places that make sponsorship status clear, and cross-check employers against the sponsor register.
| Where | Good for | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| NHS Jobs | Clinical and non-clinical NHS roles | Many adverts state whether sponsorship is considered |
| Find a job (GOV.UK) | Wide range of UK vacancies | Use keyword searches like "visa sponsorship" |
| Civil Service Jobs | Government roles | Check nationality and residency rules in each advert; many roles have restrictions |
| LinkedIn and major UK job boards | Private-sector roles | Filter by location, then read each ad for sponsorship wording |
| Company career pages | Employers on the sponsor register | Search the register for your sector, then visit their sites directly |
| Professional bodies | Regulated fields (e.g. nursing, accounting) | Check registration requirements before applying |
Protect yourself from recruitment scams
Be very wary of anyone who asks you to pay for a job offer, a Certificate of Sponsorship or a "guaranteed visa". Also be careful with offers that arrive with no interview. Verify the company on the sponsor register and on GOV.UK. Many of the warning signs in how to spot fake remote job scams in Nigeria apply to overseas offers too.
If you are also applying to other countries
The UK version of your CV won't transfer perfectly:
- US: Employers usually expect a shorter "resume", often one page for early-career applicants. US English spelling is normal.
- Canada: Resumes are similar to UK CVs but often emphasise Canadian-style formatting. Volunteering and local context carry weight.
- Australia: CVs can run longer, and referees are listed more often. Government roles may require selection criteria responses.
- Nigeria: If you also apply locally, some Nigerian employers still expect more personal details, so keep a separate version.
Visa rules in each country are separate. Check each government's official immigration site.
Your checklist before you click apply
- Confirmed the role mentions sponsorship (or you have UK work rights) and the employer is on the sponsor register.
- Removed photo, date of birth, marital status, state of origin and religion.
- Contact line shows location, +234 number and honest sponsorship status.
- CV is about two pages, single column, with standard headings.
- Nigerian employers, grades and NYSC have brief context.
- Each bullet shows an action and a real result or scope.
- Job-ad keywords added only where they truthfully describe your experience.
- Cover letter is one page, or the supporting statement addresses every criterion in the person specification.
- Checked visa details on GOV.UK, not on social media or agents' claims.
- Never paid anyone for a job offer or sponsorship.
Applying from abroad usually takes more applications and more patience than applying locally. Clear, honest documents aimed at roles that can actually sponsor you are the best use of your time.
